YOUNG PEOPLE, STAND UP AND BE COUNTED!

It has been a tough moment for me as I have not had an definite answer as to why it is too hard for some senior citizens of this country to call it a day after years of public service. We had Prof Mugenda of KU,Justice Tunoi and Rawal amongst other public servants who have hit 60 plus but still believe that there is so much un finished business in their in trays that must be sorted out before calling it a day. On the other  hand we had Hon Mutunga who chose to retire an year earlier and Julius Kipngetich who has chosen to stand up with our home of value,Uchumi Supermarkets when very few believe that Uchumi can be rescued from it's current woes. What informed each one of these men and women's decisions may not be known to most of us but as a young man in this country, this leaves me with more questions than answers.

A closer look at what young people have done in the past is not encouraging either. The likes of Bruce Odhiambo and Catherine Namuye, not forgetting Josephine Kabura have also given those who believe that the youth are the leaders of tomorrow a lifeline. All is not lost though as we have the likes of Sam Gichuru,Irungu Nyakera (https://www.facebook.com/yinka.adeyemi.58/posts/10153784420982252) Linda Kamau ,MP Ken Okoth amongst others who have said that the youth are the leaders of today and tomorrow too. They have chosen to stand up and be counted instead of joining the ever growing number of young men and women who want to continue dimming the prospects of the youth ever holding positions that can inspire hope and confidence in our generation and beyond.

The on going Police vetting had just confirmed what type of a people we have chosen to be. Police are a mirror of the society that has produced a big number of Men and women with no values but with an insatiable hunger for making the most in the shortest time possible without questioning the long term effect to our country and the youth in particular. Life style audit of various parastatals' employees reveals a similar trend whereas our politicians have just proven to be in a class of their own. We have seen them fake mileage claims just to milk more from from public coffers not forgetting other monies that cannot be accounted for.

Youthful politicians have done us no good either and the few who have stood up for our generation are rarely heard of. Most of them have been reduced to guns for hire by political honchos instead of standing up and challenging status quo. Mr Issack Hassan and Mr Ezra Chiloba of IEBC are youthful but they are being forced out of office. Have they done any outstanding thing that can make the youth of this nation proud? This I leave to you to to give a verdict.

Devolved units have very youthful MCAs but there is nothing much to write about them. Reactions from the recent gazettement of members of the National Youth Council by CS Sicily Kariuki are also an indicator that no one takes the youth of this country seriously because we don't take our selves seriously too. This is the sad reality that no one is giving airtime. From embezzlement of the youth fund to the infamous Kazi kwa vijana,it has been a sad story after another.

Media personalities have done us a lot of damage. From programmes that encourage promiscuity on radio to those promoting betting as a way of life. This is what they believe will make the youth of today and tomorrow. The youth have just been subjected to all manner of ills that milk the few coins they have, that have created a dependency syndrome on handouts to tools for hire by politicians whose selfish interests do no good to us. Those in the boda boda industry are fast heading to the grave out of the ever increasing accidents to health complications arising from failure to use protective gear. All this is happening when government bodies charged with maintaining sanity in this sector care less if they do.

It is against this  backdrop that I challenge the youth of this nation to stand up and be counted if we expect our children's children to enjoy living in this country. We must be men and women of unquestionable values and morals if we are to lay a strong foundation that our kids will build on. Each one of must must stay woke and our presence in the various sectors of the economy must not only be heard of but must be felt too. Our little efforts must count without allowing anyone  to take us for a ride.

Most Matatu drivers are young men and women who continue to cause this nation serious damage in the name of accidents, lawlessness and all manner of inconveniences in the name of traffic jams that can be managed if we had some degree of respect to the law and sense of ownership to not only the present but the future. A good number of Police officers are young men and women too hence have a say in the security of modern day Kenya and that of future generations hence must stand out and say no to corruption too. Youthful auditors have a say on whether companies will keep on going under as a result of cooked books or we can have strong institutions/organizations that can outlive our generation. Young doctors and nurses have a say on how our hospitals should be run and the quality of health care too. Recent visit by CS Health Mr Mailu revealed that theatre equipment at KNH has not been sterilized always as it is required and I trust the young folks in here have a role to play for this to be done.

Can we stand up and be counted, yes we can!
